Introduction

Case and tray packers are end-of-line machines that package product into corrugated cases or trays. There are several types of case packing equipment, with differences in function and loading mechanisms. Each has its own advantages, so it's important to choose the right type of case packer for your operation.

This article will offer an introduction to each type of case packer. Future posts will dive deeper into each of these machines and the options available.

Types of case packing equipment

Depending on your application, several types of machines are available:

  • Case/Tray forming only

  • Case/Tray loading only

  • Case/Tray loading and sealing

  • Sealing only

  • Integrated form/load/seal

Case/Tray formers

Case formers (or erectors) perform exactly the function the name suggests. Case formers will automate the process of forming RSC cases, HSC cases, or trays and will seal the bottom of the case with tape or glue before passing the formed case or tray to the next stage of the operation.

Case formers have a couple strong use cases. The first is that they can be an efficient use of capex to increase the productivity of a manual packing operation. They can also be deployed as part of a fully automated solution supplying cases to a downstream loading operation - typically a stand alone robotic case loading cell.

Case/Tray loaders

Case or tray loaders load product into pre-formed cases. Often these are robotic top loading systems, though this is not always the case. These systems can be especially beneficial with very unique applications, whether it be product, speed or layout.

Case sealers

Case sealers use either tape or glue to seal cases once loaded. Due to the simplicity and availability of low cost machines available, these are often found as part of a manual packing operation. Case sealers will also be deployed where automated case loaders are present upstream, although often they will be designed for faster operation with more line integration capabilities in these applications.

Integrated case packers (form/load/seal)

Integrated case packers complete all operations with one machine. The case magazine can be loaded with flat cases (typically RSC or wrap-around), product will enter the machine and loaded, sealed cases will discharge.

There are many factors to consider when selecting the type of case packer, such as load type, case type, product type, orientation, speed etc. Integrated case packers can be made for almost all applications.

Which case packer solution is right for me?

If looking for a productivity improvement on a manual pack station with modest speeds, adding a case former and/or case sealer can be a simple and relatively low cost option to realize these gains quickly.

When considering a fully automated solution, integrated case packers have the advantage of seamless integration between transformations, as well as a generally more compact footprint than three separate machines. However, integrated machines can get quite large, especially in high speed applications, and integrating stand-alone machines can fit unique layouts.

Additionally, unique product loading or very high speeds requirements may dictate the use of several single operation machines.
